Laura Sue "Lala" Davis Overton of Sherwood, AR, age 84, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 1, 2023. She was born April 3, 1939 to Bruce and Annie Laurie "Archie" Davis in Gurdon, Arkansas.
Growing up in Gurdon, Laura could be found at either the M-System helping out at the family grocery store, or at the Hoo-Hoo Theatre watching movies like Miracle on 34 th Street with her cousin Danny. Even as a young girl, Laura had a quiet yet strong faith that guided her throughout her storied life.
Laura had a long career that included such diverse jobs as a brief stint in modeling, school bus driver, sales, interior decorating, real estate, and property management. She even owned and operated one of the first food trucks back in the 1970's – dishing out corndogs outside of the Jacksonville Walmart in her famous, "Weinie Wagon".
In the early 80's when she noticed a ministry that was being underserved by the local churches, she started the Singles' Plus newsletter and network that helped to create a sense of community and ministry for middle-aged Christian singles of all faiths. 'Christian Mingle' had nothing on Laura Sue.
Laura was naturally skilled in many different facets of life but it's safe to say art was her passion. She could paint a masterpiece, cook for a king, and decorate for a queen. Her favorite phrase, "ever so slightly" aptly describes the subtle changes she loved to make that turned many a drab room into a showplace and many a bland meal into fine southern cuisine.
Christmas gifts were her specialty and if you ever received one from her, you know how unique and personalized they were. Her grandchildren would agree her best gift was the famous "I'M ONE OF LALA'S BOYS" sweatshirt, followed closely by the battery storage case!
She loved the Lord and was a long-time member of Sherwood First Baptist Church. She always looked forward to worship services and Sunday morning fellowship with the "Willing Workers" Senior Sunday school class. Their longtime love and support will be eternally appreciated.
Laura is survived by her sister, Melynda (Joe) Childers; children, Rhonda (Edward) Gillies, Samee Hollingsworth, and Brock Overton; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Family will receive friends for visitation on Friday, May 5, 2023 and 1:00 pm, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 pm.
For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to Willing Workers Sunday School class c/o Sherwood First Baptist Church, in Laura's name. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Cremation Services of Arkansas (501)313-5431
